Police reported they were notified by a man who noticed a vehicle in Hanau smeared with red-colored liquid

Approximately 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.

Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.

The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.

Officers then located multiple other marked vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police state early analysis show the substance was likely human blood.

"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet informed of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they commented.

City officials announced they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.

A senior political figure said the vandalism left him stunned and required to be solved quickly.

"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the death of nine victims by a gunman focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
