Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like standard biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He dreads the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
