The Trump movement's most revealing and defining moments – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing the public his designs for a gilded ballroom twice the size than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing to erect it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties from his cuts to USAID stands at 600,000 and growing, and recently research projected his energy policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no other president would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.
We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' toward 'the gentle will succumb from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to observe the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched across decades while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a symbol of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he condemned in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, however it is still disconcerting through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Jesus that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus of any Christian faith, and given that the rapidly expanding group within America might have little sense of him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or nones. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.
It is emphatically definitely not the story of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who must quickly flee to a foreign land to escape secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine focuses on affection for others, particularly for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, shown by providing food and protecting. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to present the additional cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a means to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if an individual takes your jacket you should give him your sweater too.
The evident and straightforward reality that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a type of profound affection concentrated on the needy has perpetually caused the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Finest of Us
So I have been encouraged to witness the determined opposition against Trump develop during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and requests to the best parts within national heritage.
We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you welcome them and embrace them or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is most protected by reference to what makes it special and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In all circumstances does it mean pretending the worst regarding America and Christianity did not happen; it represents both humility and belief, a combination that committed US believers ought to accept.
