The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
