ARIZONA ROUNDUP AUGUST 26, 2005 tion to to to to to to Metro News, 602-444-NEWS (6397) Teens studying rock of a different kind FLAGSTAFF Three high school students jump out of their raft and onto the bank of the Colorado River in the morning sun, carrying a compass, a tape measure and a plastic pole striped like a giant candy cane. They scramble over boulders and uphill through bushes in Marble Canyon in search of something the size of a thumbtack, guided by a photo shot from an airplane. After 10 minutes of looking, Flagstaff High student Grant Russell spots his target: a tiny mark shaped like a plus sign scraped into a rock that's carved and fragmented everywhere. It's one of at least 870 marks U.S. Geological Survey researchers have made over the years to track where, exactly, they're doing research when conducting studies of beaches, vegetation, fish and archeology in or along the Colorado River.

The problem is, there are so many markings that not even the scientists know where they By Cyndy Cole ARIZONA DAILY SUN all are. So this group of 10 highschoolers, led by a Flagstaff non-profit agency, came to help log and locate them for use in future studies. The teenagers washed cars, did chores, researched issues and raised $200 each to qualify for this oar trip from Lees Ferry to Phantom Ranch with Grand Canyon Youth, a Flagstaff organization that believes the best way to teach children about the Grand Canyon area is to take them there. It sends about 40 per year. Sinagua High student Anthony Taylor had never seen the canyon before last week.

"I've seen it on TV, (in) a movie called Joe Dirt," Taylor said. These teenagers had all been on some sort of river trip before. Their parents include firefighters, community leaders, professors, river guides and Gore technicians. They didn't flinch when told their toilet would be a Vietnamera ammunition can or that they wouldn't bathe for a week. All from different schools, two from outside Flagstaff, they started out quietly, sitting OBITUARIES 1953, Jack worked with Joe Wong Associated Architects on many project, including the Carefree Inn, Dale Anderson's Restaurant, and Paiute and Hopi Schools in Scottsdale.

THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC FRIDAY, STATE Migrants fire rocks, force Border helicopter to land YUMA Undocumented immigrants threw rocks at a Border Patrol helicopter, foreing the pilot to make an emergency landing when one of the rocks damaged the rotor, the agency said. Neither the pilot nor a Border Patrol observer was injured. The A-Star helicopter was two miles west of the U.S. Port of Entry in Andrade, on Tuesday when a group of immigrants began throwing rocks at the aircraft.

One baseball-sized rock gashed the rotor, forcing the pilot to land nearby, said Michael Gramley, spokesman for the Border Patrol sector based in Yuma. Gramley said he did not know how high the helicopter was hovering when it was struck, but he said it was being repaired and is expected back in service soon. After the incident, 17 people were apprehended for illegally crossing the border, and two of them were being investigated for smuggling. Ten immigrants evaded capture. By Day 3 they were throwing each other overboard, painting each other's toenails and having water battles. Every day came with a different science lesson from Northern Arizona University geologist Matt Kaplinsky, a river runner and researcher who maps the river's sandbars and beaches to monitor how they're changing because of the Glen Canyon Dam. He described the rock layers and quizzed the students on how they formed, leading one long, hot bushwhack up a mesa he described as only for "the few, the proud, the stupid." Besides finding surveyors' points, the students helped photograph the beaches, sneaking up onto rock ledges to reload cameras mounted on rocks, and set out underwater thermometers to measure the river's temperatures. By night, each did a presentation on some aspect of the Grand Canyon, the research component of their trip. Gabby Posner, of Flagstaff High, was the first presenter and talked about Glen Canyon I.

A discussion about whether it was ultimately good or bad resurfaced throughout the trip almost as often as lines from Napoleon Dynamite. The group pulled over for a morning hike into Rider Canyon.

Katelynn Jenkins, of Coconino High, gave a presentation there on the danger of sitting in slot canyons during monsoon season, which it is, and the river guides added stories of unlikely survival and death on the river. The teenagers continually quizzed the river guides on their jobs. Some came away wanting to be river guides. Many took a turn on the oars. Russell thought it'd be good to be a scientist with a job that called for visits to the river.
